Pemberton Lecture - 10th September 2012

The School of Health and Related Research (ScHARR) has just announced the details of their second Pemberton Lecture and this year they welcome guest lecturer Sir Iain Chalmers, Coordinator of The James Lind Initiative.

In an analysis published in the Lancet in 2009, Chalmers and Glasziou estimated that there is avoidable waste of 85% of the 100 billion US dollars invested every year in medical research. A follow-up series of papers looking into this problem in preclinical, clinical, and epidemiological research is currently being prepared. Iain Chalmers will present some preliminary findings from this work.” (ScHARR)

The Pemberton lecture will take place on Monday, 10th September 2012 at 5pm - Students Union Auditorium, University of Sheffield. All staff and students are welcome to attend and there will also be a wine reception afterwards

For more details and to book a seat visit the ScHARR website;

Library Refurb

As part of the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health's Medical School redevelopment, the Health Sciences Library (HSL) at RHH is being refurbished, and the work is now well under way.  The journal archives and non-core reading materials have been relocated to Western Bank Library and the study space area blocked off. The main entrance and service point however are still in use and will continue to be throughout the refurbishment period (April-September), along with 5,000 core titles that will be still be immediately accessible for customers.

To keep up-to-date with all the latest developments you can follow the Faculty's blog or hear the latest news via their twitter account, @SheffUniMDH. There's also lots of information on the Library webpages including details on where to go for alternative study space and IT facilities.

It's a really exciting time for the Library and the Faculty and we're working hard to make sure we minimize the disruption during this period. We'll see you in the new HSL this September!
